Get a live one-on-one critique!
A one-on-one is a 25 or 30-minute critique via Zoom with any of our available instructors, agents, or editors. Availability changes throughout the year, but there will still be one-on-ones to choose from when your project is ready.
How one-on-one critiques work:
Step 1: Review the list below of people offering critiques. Each instructor specializes in critiquing specific types of work, so please make sure you select the person right for your project.
*If you choose someone who specializes in picture book critiques, please only submit ONE manuscript (as a Word Doc) or ONE dummy (as a PDF) for critique, unless they specify otherwise, and please keep your submission within the stated word count guidelines (or 1,000 words if unstated).*
If the instructor you want no longer has slots available, you can fill out our waitlist form, and we'll contact you if they are available. There is no guarantee that an agent or editor will become available again once their critiques have sold out.
Step 2: Purchase your one-on-one critique.
Step 3: Watch your email for a confirmation email. You will receive a link directly to our scheduling system to select the available date/time that works best for you.
Step 4: You'll need to upload your work at least a week in advance to give the instructor of your choice time to give you thoughtful feedback. The submission link will also be provided in your scheduling email.
Step 5: Meet live for feedback via the zoom link provided in your email!
If at any point in the process you have questions, you can email us at support@storytelleracademy.com.
Replays of your meeting will automatically be sent to you 3 - 5 days after your critique has happened.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
What are the benefits of a one-on-one critique?
If you don't have time for a mentored critique group, you can still get one-on-one feedback from an instructor. These are especially valuable for when you're stuck on a problem that your critique group hasn't been able to help with, or when you need some guidance on direction, or when you think your story is ready to query agents or submit.
-
Can I purchase a one-on-one in advance, or can I be put on the waitlist for a specific instructor?
Yes, you can purchase a one-on-one in advance. We have several instructors available on a first-come-first-serve basis, and we do rotate which instructors are available throughout the year. If you are unable to get the instructor of your choice, you can go on a waitlist (with no obligation to buy) for the next time they'll be available by filling out a waitlist form at this link https://www.storytelleracademy.com/1on1-waitlist or emailing suppport@storytelleracademy.com.
-
Can I purchase multiple one-on-ones?
Yes, you may purchase one-on-one critiques from multiple instructors, and you may also purchase more than one with an individual instructor. If you find one instructor's critiques really help you, then we encourage you to benefit from that as much as you're able.
If we have a limited opportunity with an agent or an editor, then please only purchase one.
-
If I downgrade to Makers Plus after purchasing a one-on-one, will I lose my spot?
No. You don't have to be a Makers Pro member to buy a one-on-one. Makers Pro members get first dibs on limited opportunities, but any student may buy a one-on-one critique with an instructor.
-
Can we change the schedule for an instructor's one-on-one?
No. The calendar has been set per the mentor’s availability. Make sure you check your availability before purchasing.
-
Is this a one-time fee, or do you offer financing aid?
It's a one-time payment of $175.
-
What is your cancellation policy?
You may cancel up to seven days before the meeting and still get a full refund. After that, you have 48 hours to cancel for a 50% refund before the meeting. No refund will be issued after the meeting.
-
If I have trouble accessing my one-on-one Zoom meeting link, who should I reach out to?
You may send an email to support@storytelleracademy.com for help. This is one of the rare situations where we encourage you to reach out to multiple people for help. If your Zoom link isn't working, then we need to fix that problem as quickly as possible.
